History of the  S-10

1982

Pickup:
The S10 model was first introduced by Chevrolet replacing the Isuzu built Chevy LUV pickup  The 2wd pickups were the only model available in the introductory year. It was available as a standard cab with the short or long bed. 
Manual transmissions used a rod & linkage style clutch
Available engines:
84 HP / 1.9L 4 cyl 2 bbl carbureted
110 HP / 2.8L V6 2 bbl carbureted

1983

Blazer:
The S10 Blazer series makes its debut
Pickup:
The extended cab was introduced
Common:
Insta-Trac 4x4 system was introduced
Available engines:
84 HP / 1.9L 4 cyl 2 bbl carbureted
83 HP / 2.0L 4 cyl 2 bbl carbureted
110 HP / 2.8L V6 2 bbl carbureted

1984
Common:
A heavy duty suspension and off-road package was introduced
Hydraulic style clutch introduced
Available engines:
84 HP / 1.9L 4 cyl 2 bbl carbureted
83 HP / 2.0L 4 cyl 2 bbl carbureted
110 HP / 2.8L V6 2 bbl carbureted

1985
Common:
The 2.0L engine was discontinued and replaced with the 2.5L "Iron Duke"

84 HP / 1.9L 4 cyl 2 bbl carbureted
92 HP / 2.5L 4 cyl TBI
110 HP / 2.8L V6 2 bbl carbureted

1986
Common:
The 1.9L 4 cyl engine was discontinued
The 2.8L V6 received Throttle Body Injection (TBI) and the TBI engines became computer controlled
The interior was redesigned (dash board and door panels)

92 HP / 2.5L 4 cyl TBI
125 HP / 2.8L V6 TBI

1987
Common:
The 2.8L engine was converted to a single serpentine belt

1988
Common:
The 4.3L V6 engine was introduced

1989
Common:
Rear wheel anti-lock brakes introduced
The digital instrument cluster first appeared

1990
Common:
Improvements were made to the 2.5L 4 cyl engine and the 5 spd manual transmission

1991
Blazer:
A 4 door version of the Blazer and Jimmy was introduced
A new Sport Package is offered on the 4 doors that includes two-tone paint, alloy wheels, and chrome trim
A front bench seat option gave the 4 door models a six passenger capacity
Pickup:
4wd models receive the 4.3L V6 as standard equipment
Common:
The front grill is redesigned to be one piece
Available engines:
105 HP / 2.5L 4 cyl TBI
125 HP / 2.8L V6 TBI
160 HP / 4.3L V6 TBI

1992
Blazer:
The high performance Vortec 4.3L V6 engine debuts
Four wheel ABS becomes standard equipment
Pickup:
Extended cabs were offered with leather seats
Common:
The front bucket seats were redesigned and a new speedometer and 4 spoke steering wheel are added
A premium sound system with CD player becomes an option
An electronic-shift transfer case becomes an option on 4wd models
Available engines:
105 HP / 2.5L 4 cyl TBI
125 HP / 2.8L V6 TBI
160 HP / 4.3L V6 TBI
195 HP / 4.3L V6 CPFI Vortec (Blazer only)

1993
Blazer:
2 door model available in LT trim package
All models receive two-tone paint scheme in LT trim
Manual lumbar adjusters on front seats become standard
Common:
The front grill is redesigned
The 4.3L V6 engine received an internal balance shaft to reduce vibration
Available engines:
105 HP / 2.5L 4 cyl TBI
125 HP / 2.8L V6 TBI
165 HP / 4.3L V6 TBI
195 HP / 4.3L V6 CPFI Vortec (Blazer only)

1994
Pickup:
A new body style is first offered
All V6 trucks receive 4 wheel ABS while 4 cyl models get rear ABS
The ZR2 off-road package is offered. It includes off-road suspension and tires, 3in lift, a wider track, wheel flares, and skid plates
The SS package is offered with Vortec engine, sport suspension, and alloy wheels
The high performance Vortec 4.3L V6 engine becomes available on the pickup
Common:
Side door gaurd beams are standard
Also standard is a 3rd brake light
The 2.8L V6 engine is discontinued and
replaced by a 2.2L 4 cyl

118 HP / 2.2L 4 cyl MPFI
165 HP / 4.3L V6 TBI
195 HP / 4.3L V6 CMFI
195 HP / 4.3L V6 CPFI Vortec

1995

Blazer:
All new body style based on the '94 S10 pickup
Five different suspension packages are available
The spare tire on 4 door model is now mounted below the cargo bay instead of inside it
Driver side airbag and A/C are standard equipment
Pickup:
The ZR2 off-road package is offered on the extended-cab
Driver side airbag is added
A manual transmission can be ordered with the
191HP 4.3L V6
Common:
Daytime running lights (DRL) become standard
Available engines:
118 HP / 2.2L 4 cyl MPFI
155 HP / 4.3L V6 TBI
191 HP / 4.3L V6 CMFI Vortec

1996
Blazer:
A 5 spd manual transmission is optional on 2 door models
5 new colors are offered
Pickup:
4 cyl models receive an optional 5 spd manual transmission for better acceleration and 4 wheel ABS
The new Sportside cargo box is offered
The extended-cab models get a third-door on the driver's side to facilitate loading cargo and passengers

1997
Blazer:
All wheel drive Blazers get 4-wheel disc brakes
Base Blazers get a chrome grill, while LT 4 door models have body color grills
A power sunroof is offered
4 door models get the option of a 1-piece liftgate or the standard tailgate
Common:
The automatic transmission is refined resulting in smoother more efficient shifts

175 HP (2wd) / 180 HP (4wd)
4.3L V6 CSFI
180 HP (2wd) / 190 HP (4wd)

1998
Common:
The S-series gets a facelift and a new interior with dual airbags
Other changes include new radios and automatic headlight control

120 HP / 2.2L 4 cyl SFI
180 HP (2wd) / 190 HP (4wd)
4.3L V6 CSFI

1999
Blazer:
New power seating features
Upgraded sound system options with available redundant radio controls in the steering wheel
The TrailBlazer name is introduced as a luxury and decor package on the 4 door.
Pickup:
The all new Xtreme sport package replaces the SS model
Common:
The AutoTrac electronic push button transfer case is available on some 4wd models.
Aluminum skid plates are replaced by carbon fiber.

120 HP / 2.2L 4 cyl SFI
180 HP (2wd) / 190 HP (4wd)
4.3L V6 CSFI

2000

2001
Pickup:
Chevrolet and GMC introduce the 4 door crew cab available in 4wd only.

2003
Pickup:
Last year for the S-10 pickup except for the crew cab.

2004
Pickup:
Last year for the S-10 crew cab.
Blazer:
Last year for the 4 door Blazer except in fleet sales.
