Pictorial of M.Hall's BadBowtie SFA
This is his truck and he is a Killer Cool guy for giving me this stuff. He has done what I'm wanting to do to my Blazer. So just like you I'm learning from this. Here we GO! The following are from a 76-77 Bronco:
The following will be needed from a 66-75 Bronco:
The following will be needed from any 66-77 Bronco
The following will also be needed from various 70`s model Scout II: power steering box Other needed items:
O.K. procedure for axle swap??? If I am not clear on anything let me know... trying to think and write at the same time After you get all your parts, you will need to make sure you have... full bottles on your torch and A full spool on your welder... then you take your rear axle out and take the spring perch measurements... take the 9" and clear all mounts off of it, and remount the perches according to the measurements you have from stock... you will need A different u-joint to mate it up???
Now the fun part... I'll probably leave some out, not thinking, so be patient... Remove all the I.F.S. , all the removable brackets and hardware... Cut all the bracketry off the frame... I.F.S. no more!!! then start filling in the gaps with steel plates, some are up to 1/2" thick...what you cant fill, weld up... after you have the frame smooth, put your axle and springs under the truck and it's time to measure... take the measurement from bronco frame and transfer to yours, until you have all the hanger measurements on it... then start cutting the hangers from the Bronco frame and remounting them, except the shock mounts and panhard bar- leave those until later... You will need to weld two 10"x10"x1/4" plates to the underside of frame for the trailing arms and trans to mount to... your trans. mount must be removed at this point and A new one made, 3" wide 1/4"thick channel iron cut to length... Once you have your bracketry on, start mounting your axle...(re-check-everything!!!) You will notice the crossmember is in the way, cut it out-- (leaving the engine mounts)... put A new crossmember below the crank pulley, made of 2-3" 1/4" thick steel...
Put your steering linkage on the axle and remove the steering box if you
have not already done so...
measure and figure your steering box mounting location... configure your linkage to the column and mount your steering box... after you mount, make sure the wheel turns as it should... O.K. now the axles should be mounted and the steering linkage hooked up... let the truck down on the tires and center the axle for the panhard bar, then mount it to your frame to keep the axle in the center... Now lift it back up and put your shocks on... let the axle droop on the springs and mount your shocks and hangers in the fully extended position... Install your brake lines and driveshafts and you should be done ...
THIS IS NOT FOR THE
NOVICE!!! EXPERIENCED ONLY!!! If someone screws up they could lose their
lives, or never finish what they start... ((( Keep in mind that this is not
exact instructions but just a general overview to give you an idea of what
has to be done... ))) Back to tech pages menu Last Modified: October 05, 2006 JDM |
