My parents gave me this 1994 GMC Jimmy for my seventeenth birthday two years ago in rather bad shape. We bought it new in 94 and since then everyone in my family has driven it for a while. Its an SLT (Slow Learning Teenager) model and has every option except a sunroof. I hadn't planned on keeping it but reciently i found a donor truck with solid doors and i couldnt resist. This is the beginning of my overhaul of this truck. got new doors, hoping to find fenders (yea right) and the truck is gettin a camo green paint job, custom baja bumper, winch mount, and offroad lights galore.

These are pictures of the truck as it is before i begin its overhaul

the lower quaters are shot. this side doesnt even have the inner backing left
Image

Passenger Rocker is toast. all started when i dented it on a rock last year just below the hole in the door
Image

I already put on one of the new doors.
Image

the hood dosen't close all the way. tree branch went through the grill bent the radiator core support and pushed the hood up

Heres what is on the tailgate. it came from a custom blazer

Went out to Harry's U Pull-It in PA this weekend. got a grille, skid plates, front valance and tow hooks for $70.

Image

Got one question though. The front diff skid has two mounts that bolt up to the diff support and when i pulled them off i needed to cut the bolt because it hit the oil pan. Is this normal or was the donor truck just tweeked?

so i got most of the new sheet metal primed. fenders are ready to go on but will wait untill i paint it. at $275 a gallon for rust proofing/sealing primer i dont want anything to damage it until it gets painted. currently doing the rear quater rust repair and the rockers too

every thing was going good until sunday when my trans went. i lost 1st 2nd and 4th but it'll go into 2nd if i do it manualy. thus begins a few weeks where my truck will be out of my hands untill i can get it fixed. plan on using a Transgo shift kit and a deep aluminum pan. also gonna put in a trans temp gauge. where's the best spot to put the sending unit?

so sunday i was on my way home from work when my brakes gave out an i rear ended a silverado.
Image

the guy had a kayack in the back of his truck that went through my windshield and bent the roof

Image

once i tore it all apart the front end wasn't really that bad but its all gettin replaced anyway

Image

the fan chewed up the radiator pretty good and the hood latch went through the AC condenser so now ive got some added work to do on my restoration project

Is this the proof that some times it pay to wait?
What's the deal with the brakes?

i would be doing a sfa right now if my brakes haden't gone out either, but no instead im skinning a door, replaced front end, straightening hinges, and repainting it all over again. I think it is the lack of abs on the early model s10's cause everyone i know complains about that.

basically what i think happende with the brakes is that by the time i saw the truck i had to slam on the brakes. when i did this the pedal weht to the floor i assume because one of the front rubber lines blew where it connects to the caliper. the weird thing is that after a few seconds the front tires locked up so it would seem like nothing was wrong. i know that my brake fluid was low so i think it just had to do with a lack of fluid to the ABS unit and when it did kick in it blew the brake line

i've had 2 s-10's now and both of them scare me to death when i had to slam on the brakes...it was like it had a delayed reaction of working....the pedal just didn't react quickly like it was too much for the system to take. not sure if that was what you felt or not, but i'm with ya on that one. i always stopped in time but still was closer than i'd liked to be at the time.

Interesting thought so this lack of pedal feel I get in mine isn't caused from the SAS. Time for some research I guess.

definitely not from the sas...my old 86 s-blazer did it also and it was bone stock. who here is running a different master cylinder than stock....still do it?? also it seems like i could use more brake power too in 4 low....sometimes takes alittle more effort on the pedal than i think i should be pushing to keep it still.

This won't help you guys any, but when had my old 1/2 ton drivetrain with the 36's, it would stop very good, actually better than it ever did when stock. I had the stock MC & booster and a '80 Wagoneer D44 & a 9". I always wondered if it was because the brakes on that D44 where designed to stop that big SUV.
