AXLE CODES...

Postby BadBowtieMHall » Tue Apr 23, 2002 4:24 pm

GM was nice enough to put a dash plaque (laminated paper inside glove box) in our vehicles that lists a bunch of codes... If you see any of the following codes listed then you have the axle ratio specified...

GM8 = 2.56
GU2 = 2.73
GU4 = 3.08
GU6 = 3.42
GT4 = 3.73
GT5 = 4.10
HO4 = 4.11
G80 = Posi

The 2.56 was a 2wd option only in 82 while the 2.73 option was only an option in 82-83... An interesting thing to find was the 2.73 was an option even on the 4wd in 83...
Bad-Bowtie,M.Hall
Edited by: BadBowtieMHall at: 7/17/02 12:48:27 pm

You can find that stamp on your rear axle (front passenger side). It's the first three letters on that stamp that will tell you what the gear ratio is. Sorry, I don't have those codes.
I used up all my sick days, so I'm calling in dead, and I'd like three funeral days along with my weekend off.

Arright, I checked the sticker in my glovebox today, and found some conflicting codes. I had GQ1 (which according to mys10.com is the same as a GT4 code) as well as a GU4 code. SO what are my ratios then? 3.73 or 3.08?

Anyone know what G80 stands for?

How big a ring gear would that be anyways? I could always find out the specs and have my machinist build them

It would be cheaper to buy a set. And they would last A LOT longer
JEEPBOUND OFF-ROAD!!
<a href=http:// http://www.core4x4.org>Capital Off Road Enthusiasts, Inc.
I LIKE CHEVYS........they taste like chicken

Ruff Ryda. I double checked my axle again (in case I messed up on which side I mentioned) and it's definitely on my passengers side, stamped into the front of the axle tube. Polish the heck out of it, it just may be hidden under all the rust and grime. I've got a boneyard guy here who will give me the codes if I want them. Either way, try listing the ones you have on your diff as well. Let's see what comes up.
I used up all my sick days, so I'm calling in dead, and I'd like three funeral days along with my weekend off.
